CUR I: Budgeting

This Monday, I visited the Kiddie Academy in Lewisville, Texas, and introduced budgeting to two classes of 15 students. During the last class on budgeting, we focused on identifying needs versus wants and discussed the importance of saving. This time, while reiterating these concepts, I incorporated a hands-on activity where students had categorize spending based on real-life scenarios. Firstly, I brought up each student one at a time and gave each a sticky note as well as an item. Then, I asked them to categorize a asking them to categorize expenses into needs and wants. At the end of class, we reviewed their budgets together, discussing why certain expenses were necessary and how to balance spending on wants. Lastly, I rewarded students who actively participated in discussions by answering questions and making thoughtful budgeting choices.

We also had a new volunteer join us, Shubh, a rising sophomore at Hebron High School who brought great energy to the classroom and quickly connected with the students. It was great to see him jump right in, helping guide the activity and engaging kids with genuine enthusiasm. His presence was extremely positive and we hope to see him teaching again soon!
